NDJ Awards 2017
HUGE congratulations to all of the nominees and winners at last weeks North Devon Journal Awards at Highbullen Hotel!
The event, brought to us with headline partner Wollen Michelmore, saw 11 awards handed out to the creme de la creme of local business.
Including our Owner and Creator Russ Johns who picked up Entrepreneur of the Year award!
Our Winner Russell Johns
The Ultimate Adventure Centre is not a traditional outdoor centre or accommodation provider. Russell has always strived to make everything about the business innovative. Everything onsite is hand crafted, there isn’t a building or activity onsite that Russell hasn’t built himself. The result of this is that our customers will experience something that is truly unique.
Many of our activities are the result of Russ’ innovative thinking, not least of which is our most popular onsite activity – The Ultimate Assault. Opened in 2011, the course is the only one of its kind in the UK, taking its inspiration from TV’s Total Wipeout. The course has been designed with a range of water and land-based obstacles that challenge and test all ages and abilities. The winter of 2016 has seen most of the obstacles being redesigned and rebuilt to provide a new experience and level of challenge for the new year.
The innovative activities and accommodation Russ has designed have not only driven custom to the business, but the local economy as well. The business has been set up to reach a wide range of customer groups and ages. The Ultimate Adventure Centre is a blend of a Tourist Attraction and Activity Centre, it is this mix that makes us unique within the industry and Russell is the proof that persistence and hard work pays off.
For what started as a seasonal business with a singular activity, the business growth has been considerable. Russell has always evolved and expanded the business, year after year, to what the market demanded or never knew they wanted! Every year since the business started the site has changed dramatically, be it new accommodation or new activities. The on-site accommodation that Russell has designed and built can currently accommodate up to 250 people – with plans to expand further!
Sacrificing every ounce of his down time to re-investing in the business, Russell has never rested on his laurels. The business growth has only ever been a result of him reinvesting time and money in new developments and staff training. The business growth is testament to Russ’ efforts and entrepreneurial spirit. A growth of over £800,000 for any business would be substantial, but when that represents 400% growth in a period of 3 years, it is truly remarkable.
The Ultimate Adventure Centre has not yet reached maturity due to its constant expansion and Russell’s dedication. He is never short of innovative ideas to benefit the business and local economy. Each time the Centre grows we soon reach capacity and have new demands to cater for which Russell spends low season striving to meet and exceed. Russell is his own worst critic, constantly setting big goals to ensure the business is fresh and exciting for each individual that visits The Ultimate Adventure Centre, making him a strong, worthy and inspirational winner for Entrepreneur of the Year.
Maybe now he’s won an award Russell can put down the tools and have a rest!
Knowing him, we think not!
Here’s to the hardest working man we know!
